The pressure on US president to re-install solar panels on top of the White House is about to intensify as a group of activists get ready to make a road trip to Washington to return a solar panel to him. This solar panel used to be a part of a solar installation at Unity College at Maine. The panel was punt in place by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 and was removed President Reagan in 1986, after which it was put into storage.
A group from the Unity College is being joined by author and environmental activist Bill McKibben for the road trip that aims to put Solar Panels back on top of the White House. He appeared on the ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ to speak on this and said that he was hopeful about the situation because the Obama family already has shown an interest in the sustainable development. He cited the first lady’s organic vegetable garden as an example. To this however, Letterman was quick to say that planting a garden does not threaten the Oil & Gas sector.
Bill McKibben’s latest book is also on climate change and its effects on the planet and its civilization — called “Earth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet”. In the book, Bill is of the opinion that only ‘dire’ action can save us from ourselves now.
The solar energy game is thus intensifying in the US with lobbyists trying to push the alternative energy form forward and mainstream energy companies pushing the lobbying groups back through various means. Elsewhere in the world, it is more or less the same scenario. But as long as there is a constant public opinion about solar energy and the non-sustainability of the current energy practices, alternative forms of energy like Solar will hopefully be able to push through.
