A North Korean official told a USA counterpart that Warmbier had contracted botulism and fell into the coma after taking a sleeping pill, CNN reports.

Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in March 2016 for subversion. He was sentenced in March 2016 after a televised trial in North Korea, when he publicly confessed to trying to steal a propaganda banner.
Friends and well-wishers gathered outside Cincinnati’s Lunken Airport Terminal ahead of the anticipated 10 p.m. arrival of the plane carrying Warmbier.
Warmbier, 22, a University of Virginia undergraduate, was convicted and sentenced in a one-hour trial in North Korea’s Supreme Court.

State Department officials are accompanying Warmbier from Sapporo to Cincinnati.
The last time Rodman visited North Korea, he delighted the country’s young ruler with a rendition of “Happy Birthday”, suffered an angry meltdown on CNN while defending his trip, and spent time at a rehab facility after returning to the United States.
Three weeks later, North Korea announced it was holding him for a “hostile act” against the state.
The White House says a USA envoy met with North Korean foreign ministry representatives in Norway last month as part of efforts to win freedom for Americans held by Pyongyang. Such meetings are unusual because the two governments do not have diplomatic relations.
Of Otto’s parents, Cynthia and Fred Warmbier, he said: ‘I can’t even begin to put myself in their shoes’.
Currently, a total of six South Koreans are detained in North Korea, including several religious missionaries accused of treason or espionage.
Three other Americans are there in the custody of the North Korean government.

The release came amid tension between Washington and Pyongyang following a series of missile tests by the North, focusing attention on an arms buildup that Pentagon chief Jim Mattis on Monday dubbed “a clear and present danger to all”. Warmbier was evacuated Tuesday.
“Let me reiterate this: We strongly, strongly suggest that Americans do not go to North Korea“, Nauert said. He flew home Tuesday in a coma-like state, according to some media reports. “No one”, Fred Warmbier said. He said he would “discuss my mission upon return to the US”.
North Korea is believed to be making progress toward developing a ballistic missile capable of reaching the US.
Warmbier was serving a 15-year prison term with hard labor for alleged anti-state acts.
The university said in a statement that Kim, also known by the Chinese version of his name Jin Xue Song, was apprehended after concluding a trip to carry out “agricultural development work” at the school’s “experimental farm”.

Otto Warmbier, a US university student held captive in North Korea for 17 months, has been released, but a former USA official said on Tuesday he is in a coma and in urgent need of medical care.
It’s unclear if Warmbier’s release during Rodman’s visit was purely coincidental.
