Doctor says Scalise recovery a good possibility

Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition, but his vital signs have “stabilized” two days after being shot during a congressional baseball practice on Wednesday, hospital officials announced Friday.

Scalise, 51, is among four people shot by a gunman at a House Republican baseball practice Wednesday in the Washington suburbs.

“The [bullet] fragmented and did substantial damage to bones, internal organs, and blood vessels”.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center Director of Trauma Dr. Jack Sava leaves a news conference in Washington, Friday, June 16, 2017, about the condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. who was shot in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, during a congressional baseball practice.

The doctor said Scalise has been sedated although the dosage has been turned down to allow him to respond to family members.

Scalise probably has hundreds of bullet fragments in his body, and doctors don’t plan to remove them because usually there is more risk than benefit in doing so, Sava said.

“He was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death”, Sava said.

Speaking earlier Friday in Miami, Trump said Scalise “took a bullet for all of us” when he was shot.

“Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve’s”, Scalise’s wife, Jennifer, said in the statement.

The president said that because of the “tremendous pain and suffering he’s now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified”.

Trump also adds, as he’s said previously, that Scalise is “having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought” following the shooting Wednesday.

After additional surgeries and rehabilitation, Scalise can be expected to walk “and hopefully run”, Sava said.
