Washington- In a strong message to Islamabad, the United States and India have told Pakistan to ensure its territory is not used for terror attacks on other countries and asked it to bring to justice terrorists blamed for attacks in Mumbai and other places in India.
After the Congress Party dubbed the India-United States joint statement as “disappointing” and believed that nothing will come out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s USA visit, Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday said it is “sheer jealousy and guilt” of the grand old party that it is deliberately refusing to see and believe the significant outcomes of this visit. “Reflecting the partnership, the United States has offered for India’s consideration the sale of Sea Guardian Unmanned Aerial Systems, which would enhance India’s capabilities and promote shared security interests”, the joint statement said.
As they met, a Pentagon agency said the US State Department has approved the possible sale to India of a Boeing C-17 transport aircraft with an estimated cost of $366 million.
“To further our economic partnership, I’m excited to report that the Prime Minister has invited my daughter, Ivanka, to lead the United States delegation to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in India this fall”.
India has been protesting the CPEC vehemently and had abstained from the Beld and Road Forum held in Beijing last month to highlight its concerns over the project.
The joint statement announced increased cooperation to prevent travel by terrorists and to disrupt global recruitment efforts by terrorists by expanding intelligence-sharing and operational-level counter-terror cooperation.
Trump did not mention USA differences with India on immigration and the Paris climate accord.
Trump said both countries have been struck by the “evils of terrorism”, and are determined to destroy terrorist organizations and the radical ideology that drives them. It’s a great honour to welcome the leader of the world’s largest democracy to the White House. “And we have had tremendous meetings today, tremendous success, and we enjoy a wonderful relationship, but it’s never been better than it is today”, he said.
In the final leg of his three-nation tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Netherlands on Tuesday to hold talks with his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte to strengthen bilateral ties. “In recent years, to ratchet up geopolitical pressure on China, the U.S. has cozied up to India”, an article in the Global Times said.
He said the Indian diaspora are the links and bridge between the people of two countries. “We also discussed global issues and our common strategic interests in this country”, the prime minister said. “I am sure that the convergence of my vision for “New India” and President Trump’s vision for making America great again will add new dimensions to our cooperation”, he said.
Prime Minister Modi will also be meeting CEOs of major Dutch companies.
Prime Minister Modi laid special emphasis on the growing camaraderie between India and the United States even as he addressed the media jointly with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House here on Monday.
During the delegation-level meeting, the two leaders touched upon various topics ranging from purchase of military equipment to the bilateral relations between the two nations.
Their warm words extended into the evening, when Modi became the first foreign leader to enjoy a White House dinner since Trump came to power. “We hope we’ll be catching you very soon in terms of percentage increase – I have to tell you, we’re working on it!”
