Trump’s Twitter response followed days of intensifying criticism of Mueller from some conservatives, who have charged the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director and his team with political bias and have claimed his relationship to Comey and an earlier meeting with Trump amount to conflicts of interest.
One lawyer who is involved in the case and knows Rosenstein well, said the veteran prosecutor is a mix of furious and amazed at Trump’s tweets.
The two senators have overseen a series of explosive public hearings into the Russian Federation issue and have publicly asked to meet meet with Mr. Mueller several times since his appointment last month in the wake of President Trump’s dismissal of FBI Director James Comey.
Also Wednesday, Senate Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley said his panel will investigate the removal of former FBI Director James Comey and “any alleged improper partisan interference in law enforcement investigations”.
Friday’s tweets are the latest in a week of angry social media responses by the president after a report by The Washington Post that Mueller was looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.
Rosenstein was the author of the memo that made the case for Comey’s firing, and now leads the Russian Federation investigation after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the investigation.
Created almost 20 years ago by Clinton Attorney General Janet Reno, the special counsel was “the right answer”, Starr said, because it while is within the executive branch of government, the role is “assured of practical independence through binding regulations”.
The focus on Rosenstein sharpened Friday because the President attacked the deputy attorney general in a tweet, blaming him for what he terms a “witch hunt“. He took over the investigation after Attorney-General Jeff Sessions recused himself in March.
The order by the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump’s presidential campaign and representatives of Russia’s government.
Vice-President Mike Pence has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.
The memo also calls for the preservation of any records pertaining to background research on former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and his business partner Rick Gates, Trump’s former foreign policy advisor Carter Page, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and Roger Stone, who served as an informal adviser. Pence headed the Trump transition until Inauguration Day.
“They made up a phoney collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phoney story”.
The transition official said the organization has also separately asked the General Services Administration to preserve records from the Trump transition that were transferred to its facilities after the inauguration. “You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history – led by some very bad and conflicted people!”
