London mayor: Grenfell Tower fire ‘preventable,’ caused by official ‘neglect’

Five people who were reported missing have also been found safe and well, London Police Commander Stuart Cundy confimed on Monday, as Britain held a minute’s silence for the victims.

In this photo released by the Metropolitan Police on Sunday, June 18, 2017, burnt out lifts on an undisclosed floor, in the Grenfell Tower.

He said five of the dead had been formally identified, and it would be a slow and painstaking task to identify the others because of the intensity of the fire.

“This is incredibly distressing time for families”.

At least 30,000 buildings across the United Arab Emirates alone have cladding or paneling similar to the kind that safety and construction experts have blamed for rapidly spreading high-rise fires there, Dubai Civil Defence director-general Maj.

COPS have revealed 79 people are now feared dead after a blaze ripped through Grenfell Tower last week.

Gaps in Grenfell’s cladding acted as a chimney for the fire once it spread to the outside of the building, allowing flames to quickly rise and engulf the tower.

Experts believe the building’s new exterior cladding, which contained insulation, helped spread the flames quickly up the outside of the public housing tower early Wednesday.

A catastrophic blaze at a London apartment tower has brought new scrutiny to a long-accepted, counterintuitive rule for people in tall buildings: If the blaze breaks out elsewhere in the structure, don’t automatically run for the stairs. The money, which will come from the £5 million emergency fund previously announced by Downing Street, and which will go to families whose homes were destroyed in the fire, may be increased if necessary, for example to pay for funeral costs.

Conservative Minister Greg Hands says if it is the type of material being reported, then it did not meet basic fire safety standards.

As outrage over the blaze mounts, the British government has promised financial relief to surviving victims, and the launch of a public inquiry.

He said that “it’s hard to describe the devastation the fire has caused”.

“I believe there may be people who were in Grenfell Tower that people may not know were missing and may not have realized they were in there on the night”.

The death toll might continue to climb, authorities cautioned, because search operations are ongoing in the remains of the charred, gutted building.

“The prime minister is very aware that people want answers promptly and we want to get this going promptly, so that’s our intention”, the spokeswoman said.

Anger among residents has been mounting in recent days, as information about the missing has been scant, and efforts to find temporary housing have faltered.

In addition, British health authorities will provide long-term bereavement counselling for those who lost loved ones in the tragedy.
