Soto was one of six educators killed along with 20 first-grade students in the December 2012 shooting at the Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school.
Kelly confronted Jones about his Sandy Hook claims during the interview, but the victims’ families argued that NBC should not be giving the Infowars.com provocateur a platform.
Late Monday, J.P. Morgan Chase announced it was pulling all TV and digital advertisements from NBC News until after Kelly’s scheduled interview airs. “She said that the interview was not going to be about Sandy Hook and the mass shooting there, and it was not going to be about Pizzagate and these other issues that the media always obsesses on and misrepresents what I’ve said and what I’ve done”.
“Shining a light works on cockroaches”, she said. Hate and evil doesn’t need another platform.
She defended interviewing Jones, known for pushing conspiracy theories, by noting that President Trump has praised him and has been on his show.
“Our goal in sitting down with him was to shine a light, as journalists are supposed to do, on this influential figure and, yes, to discuss the considerable falsehoods he has promoted with near impunity”, she said.
For her part, Kelly Tweeted that her interview with Jones would feature a discussion of “controversies and conspiracies”.
Ms Kelly told Mr Jones that his response was “a dodge”.
“I wanted to see the fembot”, Jones said.
Ms. Kelly left Fox News earlier this year for NBC, where her new show will be airing only its third episode this coming Sunday.
Kelly’s full interview with Jones airs on NBC on June 18. To do so, the show needs to not only entertain viewers – or build Kelly’s brand – but actually inform them about crucial events happening in the world around them.
“There is no justification for amplifying lies (or a liar)”, Chelsea tweeted about the interview. “I hope no parent, no person watches this”.
Danielle Vabner, whose 6-year-old brother, Noah Pozner, was killed at Sandy Hook, ripped the decision too. Congress has not passed any major gun control legislation in years since the shooting. “Imagine losing your child in a shooting while the man who denies it happened gets an interview”. One parent, Leonard Pozner, who said he used to listen to Jones’s show, has even received a number of death threats from conspiracy theorists after his son Noah was killed. “And the human cost of that is phenomenal”.
