Republicans, Democrats Play Ball for ‘Team Scalise’

Scalise was fielding balls at second base during the practice Wednesday when he was shot in the hip, and sustained serious injuries as the bullet traveled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise’s body, but “we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point”.

He was considered in “imminent risk of death” when he arrived at the hospital after the shooting, the hospital’s director of trauma, Dr. Jack Sava, said Friday. “He remains in critical condition but has improved in the last 24 hours”, the hospital said in a statement.

After additional surgeries and rehabilitation, Scalise can be expected to walk “and hopefully run”, Sava said.

Republican and Democrats faced off in the the Congressional Baseball Game Thursday night, but the spirit of bipartisanship was alive and well following the assassination attempt on some lawmakers. But he recorded a message that played at the top of the game, paying tribute to Rep. Steve Scalise, who remains in critical condition following a shooting attack on the Republicans practicing for the game Wednesday morning.

Trump said today his “dear friend”, Scalise, “took a bullet for all of us”.

The president says that because of the “tremendous pain and suffering he’s now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified”. He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding.

Scalise and three other people were shot early Wednesday at a park in suburban Washington as they practiced for a congressional charity baseball game.

“I would encourage you to talk to military medical colleagues about what it’s like to be shot with a high-velocity rifle in the hip region”, Sava said.

Sava also said Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, who was also transported to the MedStar facility is now, “in good condition and she’s in good spirits”.

This year, the charities are the “Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, after Wednesday’s shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund”.

In this baseball game, the victorious team gave a member of the losing team the winner’s trophy.

The game went ahead as scheduled Thursday, in an emotional display of bipartisan unity. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times.

U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, a Murphysboro Republican whose 12th Congressional District covers the Belleville area, has said Hodgkinson contacted his offices a number of times, but none of the communication seemed threatening, according to Bost spokesman George O’Connor.

Trump on Thursday reiterated his call for unity in the aftermath of the shooting in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia.
