President Donald Trump’s transition team has been ordered to preserve materials related to ongoing investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election, the New York Times reported on Friday, as Trump again assailed the probes. About a week after Comey was sacked last month, however, Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel at the Justice Department to oversee the federal investigation into Russia’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 USA election. Pence’s office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist “in responding to inquiries” from Mueller.
On Thursday night, he issued a statement lashing out at news stories sourced to anonymous officials and that he believes are causing the President and Republicans to attack the Justice Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mueller for alleged leaks.
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump has lashed out at the investigators driving the Russian Federation investigation as “very bad and conflicted people”, responding angrily to reports that the special counsel is looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.
Democrats and Republicans alike have criticised his use of Twitter, particularly amid the investigation into Russia’s interference in last year’s presidential election. Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win. The inquiries have yet to show evidence of collusion.
He said: “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!”
Pence hired Richard Cullen, chairman of law firm McGuireWoods, to help him respond to inquiries from Mueller, a spokesman said.
Civil-rights lawyer Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax TV Friday he believes retired Gen. Michael Flynn, who briefly served as Trump’s national security adviser this year before he was sacked for not disclosing contacts with Russians, will be indicted when the Russia probe is finished.
Pence had been looking at hiring his own counsel for several weeks, and made his decision earlier this week after interviewing several candidates, his office said. The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the investigators were looking into possible obstruction of justice.
Pence has seldom addressed the Russian Federation issue, which has overshadowed Trump’s efforts to overhaul the healthcare system, cut taxes and boost jobs – priorities that Pence has worked on intensively with Republican lawmakers.
But Rosenstein could end up recusing himself, too, Justice officials say, in part because he played a role in President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey. Trump also acknowledged, for the first time publicly, that he is under federal investigation.
Manafort, Page and Stone have also been linked to the Russian Federation investigations.
