Serena Williams has no interest in John McEnroe’s take

Now maybe McEnroe’s remarks will do the same for a sport that Serena has owned for years.

Seven-times Grand Slam victor McEnroe claimed the women’s 23-times Grand Slam champion Williams was “the best female player ever” but declined to label her the best overall. The Twitterverse is abuzz with lots of love for Williams, the image, and her pose.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Buzz Bissinger penned the cover story, which details the relationship between Williams and her fiancé, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

McEnroe may have realized what he said during the interview, as he granted that Williams has a mental toughness some male tennis players lack, but he still doubled down on his words.

McEnroe sparked controversy when he said Williams would rank “700” on the ATP men’s tennis circuit. As for whether he’d ever go up against Williams, he admitted, “I never wanted to play Serena”.

I’ve never played anyone ranked “there” nor do I have time.

McEnroe added, “I have the solution, why don’t men and women just play together?”

“I think if I were a man, I would have been in that conversation a long time ago”, Williams said last December in an interview with rapper Common for ESPN’s “The Undefeated”. “People always ask me about playing Serena”. “It would be a similar argument to: who would run faster, the fastest woman or the fastest man?” The pregnant tennis aceappears to be naked (although she’s actually wearing nude underwear) on the publication, proudly displaying her lovely (and quite pregnant) body. But King’s straight-set win was seen as a major victory for the nascent women’s movement. With her powerful game and unapologetic competitive streak, Williams is also a hero to many girls, women and sports fans.

Williams, however, wasn’t going to let McEnroe’s comments go unanswered.
