“Trump in an interview last week criticized Obama over Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, accusing the former president of doing “nothing”.
A few hours later, Trump issued two more tweets, saying: “The real story is that President Obama did NOTHING after being informed in August about Russian meddling”.
Schiff, the top ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said that Obama was hesitant to confront Russian Federation over its active measures campaign for fear of being seen as helping Hillary Clinton and of fueling Donald Trump’s allegations that the election was being “rigged” against him.
Congressional investigators and special counsel Robert Mueller are investigating possible collusion between Russian Federation and Trump campaign officials, inquiries the president has called a “total scam”, a “witch hunt” and a “hoax”.
The latest revelations center on a critical piece of evidence that led USA intelligence agencies to that conclusion. And I hardly see it.
At least four direct warnings – president Barack Obama to Putin, spy chief to spy chief, and via top diplomatic channels – appeared to have an impact, officials told the Post.
The Obama administration published a report stating that the Russians intervened in the election during the last weeks of his term, five months after the information was received. “WHY?” Trump tweeted Friday night.
According to a report published earlier by the Washington Post, Obama was reportedly informed by the Central Intelligence Agency in August 2016 that Russian President Vladimir Putin had instructed his operatives to tarnish the Democratic nominee’s campaign ahead of the elections. In particular, the CIA had obtained intelligence from sources inside the Russian government by early August that captured the Russian leader’s specific instructions to subordinates on the operation’s objectives: disparage and seek to defeat the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton while helping to deliver the White House to Trump.
“The CIA gave him information on Russian Federation a long time before they even – before the election”, Trump told Fox News. “It’s an incredible thing”, Trump told Fox News, one of the promos of the interview showed.
And then: “I feel like we sort of choked”.
The paper reported that the previous administration issued four warnings to Moscow – including one Mr Obama delivered directly to Mr Putin – causing Moscow to pull back on possible plans to sabotage United States voting operations.
The ultimate decision whether to pursue the program was left to Trump, who is now facing FBI, Department of Justice and congressional investigations into whether he or his associates colluded with Russian Federation or attempted to obstruct justice as part of a cover-up.
