Trump calls reports of obstruction probe a ‘witch hunt’

President Donald Trump suggested that there was some hypocrisy in Rosenstein’s involvement in a tweet on Friday, saying “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!”

Former Trump transition team aides were ordered to preserve any documents related to Russian Federation and the activities of a number of campaign officials, according to a memo issued by the transition team’s general counsel office Thursday.

Trump demonstrated Friday morning that the Russian Federation probe continues to consume his attention, tweeting a stream of messages decrying the controversy. An official of Trump’s transition confirmed the laywer’s internal order sent Thursday.

It was not clear if Trump’s comment was based on news reports or if the White House had been given official notice.

“It looks grossly inappropriate for the president to be bad mouthing a special counsel investigation looking into his actions and that was created by his own deputy attorney general”, said Bradley Moss, a lawyer specializing in litigation relating to national security, federal employment and security clearance law. Trump cited the memo in firing Comey.

Comey also testified he had told Trump he was not under investigation prior to his dismissal. Pence headed the Trump transition until inauguration day.

‘And in fact when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said, “You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won,”‘ Trump said at the time.

The requested records include a host of electronic communications and documents including “emails, voicemails, text messages, audio recordings, videos, photographs or images, calendar records and diary data”, and asks that aides “immediately suspend any deletion, modification, overwriting, or other possible destruction of the information described above”.

Friday’s tweets are the latest in a week of angry social media responses by the president over a report by The Washington Post that Mueller was looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.
