While the deputies were inside the home Bays shot both of them, according to investigators.
“The selfish act of the suspect put the lives of our deputies in danger”, said Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith.
The deputies returned fire, shooting and killing Bays, according to KSP.
Deputy Keith Liford was hit multiple times and Deputy Claude Hudson was hit once.
Deputy Liford was air lifted to University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, where he underwent surgery Monday afternoon and is expected to make a full recovery.
The other injured deputy was taken to a local hospital, where police say he was treated and released.
Bays was often in trouble with the law, with court officials noting 43 cases he had been involved in since 1999. “We are grateful for everyone that came out to help us”.
Kentucky State Police say they received a call for assistance on KY 225 in the Artemus community around 11:40 a.m. Monday.
Brian Simpson was also at the residence and was arrested on active warrants.
