Economically, India is doing very well and in so many other ways. The president has business partners in India, where he has more than a dozen active deals, including a Trump-branded luxury apartment complex being built in the western city of Pune, near Mumbai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday left for Netherlands, the final leg of his three-nation tour, after concluding his visit to the US.
Trump declared he was “true friend” of India and said relations between the two largest democracies have never been better.
The two are expected to discuss a range of issues, from trade and climate change to opportunities for partnership on security issues.
“I guess it’s worked very well in both cases”, he added.
While Trump has 32.8 million followers on Twitter, Modi comes a close second with over 31 million followers.
On Monday evening, Trump and Modi had a working dinner, the first time Trump has played host to a foreign dignitary at a White House dinner.
Reflecting a new bonhomie between the two leaders, officials of the two countries were seen chatting while they were waiting for Trump and Modi to arrive in the Blue Room of the White House.
Wearing an Emilio Pucci yellow floral dress in crepe, the First Lady joined Trump in welcoming Modi at the South Portico of the White House and then walk with them to the Oval Office.
“I’m sure that… your vast and successful experience in the business world will lend an aggressive and bold agenda to our relations”.
In another strong reference to Pakistan, Jaishankar said there was an extensive discussion between the two leaders on terrorism, “what its epicenter is” and how it is affecting the region, particularly the South Asian region where India is located.
Modi termed his talks with Trump as an “important page in the history of India-US relationship”.
Modi called his party’s March win in India’s largest state the “icing on the cake”.
Ahead of his talks with Trump, Modi met with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
The big takeaway was the passionate plea against terrorism and the overt promise to go about tackling terrorism in the Indian subcontinent together, shutting down terror camps across the Line of Control, in Pakistan occupied Kashmir. While China expressed ire at India being sold 22 surveillance drones, Pakistan was stunned as Syed Salahauddin, the head of Hizbul Mujahideen, as a “global terrorist”, since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan had even mentioned Burhan Wani, the slain Hizbul militant, as a martyr at the UNHRC meet some time back.
Shortly after Trump’s election, obstacles emerged on issues such as trade and visas for Indians wanting to work in the United States.
India is among the nations singled out by the Trump administration for their trade surpluses with the USA, and it is also reviewing a visa program used heavily by skilled Indian workers.
But Indian officials have downplayed those differences, insisting that Modi was alert to Trump’s concerns over jobs and trade.
While ties with some of Washington’s traditional allies have been strained by Trump’s complaints that the United States has been the loser in trade agreements, Modi appears alert to his host’s sensitivities and emphasis on transactional diplomacy.
