Mrs. Hodgkinson said her husband sold nearly everything from his businesses before he moved to the east coast. The alleged shooter, identified by police as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, was killed in a shootout with police Wednesday morning after shooting Rep. Capitol Police officers returned fire, and Hodgkinson was fatally wounded.
Sue Hodgkinson stood unsteady and emotional as a local sheriff’s deputy held her hand and led her to a bank of several microphones.
She would not discuss her husband’s politics affiliations, but stressed she had no idea that he had weapons with him. “435 Members of Congress, and 300 million Americans, are pulling for him, praying for him, and pledging to him our full and total support”, he said.
“He never bothered anybody that I knew of”, Guetterman said, shaking his head in disbelief that someone living that close to him could do something like that.
“I just don’t know what to tell you people”, she told reporters.
Asked about her husband’s decision to leave for an extended period of time, Hodgkinson said that her daughter and two-year-old granddaughter had recently moved home. He told her he was going to Washington DC to “change the tax brackets” and “work on taxes”, she said.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) – For three months, James T. Hodgkinson lived out of a white cargo van in a gentrified neighborhood just miles from where US laws are made. He had run out of money, his wife told reporters. Hodgkinson was mortally wounded by police.
Since the shooting, members of Congress have spoken about a need for unity, at a time when polarization seems to be at an all-time high. “The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding”, a hospital statement said.
On March 24, Bill Schaumleffel recalled hearing shots being fired outside his house, which stands about 500 feet behind Hodgkinson’s home. A congressional staffer, Zach Barth, was shot in the leg; he was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, the Post reports.
He used a.30-caliber semi-automatic rifle and a 9 mm handgun. They won’t look down on the fact that he, you know, he did wrong. “Other than that, the state can’t take it away”.
Hodgkinson belonged to multiple anti-Republican political groups and was upset about Trump’s election victory, brother Michael Hodgkinson said. Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Tim Slater said the Federal Bureau of Investigation needs the public’s help in piecing together Hodgkinson’s whereabouts and activities while he was in Alexandria.
Inside that vehicle, agents recovered a cell phone, a camera and a computer.
